Susie was originally rescued by a kind resident of Tofield who found her wandering through town, frightened and extremely hungry. The rescuer brought her home, provided food, shelter, and love, and cared for her for about a week. However, she was in the middle of moving from Tofield to Edmonton and knew she wouldn't be able to keep Susie long-term.

She reached out to us for help—this was before Maplelatte Animal Shelter Society was officially registered as a non-profit. We gladly accepted Susie into our care.

About a week later, the rescuer contacted us again to let us know she had found a family in Edmonton who was very interested in adopting Susie. Wanting to give Susie the opportunity to find a loving home, we agreed to a 24-hour trial adoption.

That evening, we received heartbreaking news.

According to the prospective adopters, Susie had escaped when the mail carrier came to the door. Unfortunately, as we spoke with them, their story kept changing and many of the details didn't make sense. We searched tirelessly for Susie in the area where she had gone missing, but despite our efforts, there were no signs of her. As time passed, the trail grew colder, and hope slowly began to fade.

Nearly four months later, we received an unexpected phone call from Edmonton Animal Care & Control Centre. A bylaw officer had found Susie wandering, and when they scanned her, they discovered the microchip we had implanted when she first came into our care.

She was safe.

The very next day, we drove to Edmonton and happily brought Susie back to our shelter. By then, Maplelatte Animal Shelter Society had officially become a registered non-profit organization, allowing us to continue caring for her through our newly established rescue.

Although Susie showed no visible injuries, it appeared she may have given birth while she was missing. We may never know exactly what happened during those five months, but we are grateful she survived and found her way back to us.

Today, Susie's story has the happy ending she always deserved. She has found her forever family and is now living a wonderful life in a loving home, where she is safe, cherished, and deeply loved.
